2015 Australian House of the Year
Winners of the 2015 National Building Design Awards have been announced by Building Designers Australia (BDA), revealing some of the best Australian-designed buildings delivered by BDA members over the past few years.
Over 35 projects in 27 categories were awarded by the BDA in 2015, encompassing a large range of architectural projects constructed in NSW, Tasmania and South Australia.
James Cooper of Sydney-based Sanctum Design was awarded the program’s top honour, the Design Excellence Award, for his massive Middle Harbour residence, aptly named 'Cliffhanger'.
Deriving its name from its location, the Cliffhanger sits on a steep site overlooking Sydney Harbour, neighboured by a Harry Seidler residence and a modernist prototype by Douglas Snelling architect. The design solution focuses on a cost-effective lightweight construction methodology fleshed out with a combination of insulated Unitex cladding and grey ironbark textural infills. The building cascades down the clifftop and as such spreads a variety of living arrangements, linked by feature staircases and open planned spaces, over a four-storey home.
The Cliffhanger edged out a Chris White design project for the award, White’s Pet Resorts Australia in Terrigal on the NSW Central Coast was given the only other named prize from the program – The Paul Dass Memorial Award.
The Pet Resort also won the Commercial Alterations/Additions category , fighting off a strong field of entrants which included commended projects from Philip Wilkins and Tony Pike to win the prize.
