The public will be able to gain insights into the unique architecture of Adelaide when the city hosts Open House Adelaide on the weekend of 4 and 5 May 2013.
The event will be held as part of About Time: South Australia’s History Festival which will run from 1-31 May. Open House Adelaide is part of the international Open House program, which provides a weekend in which significant buildings – both old and new - are open to the public for free.
55 buildings, including everything from state-of-the-art through to heritage-listed properties, will make for an eclectic mix of buildings open for inspection. From iconic to idiosyncratic, the buildings on offer will appeal to an increasingly inquisitive and architecturally-savvy public. They range from the Freemasons Grand Lodge and Thebarton Incinerator (the latter designed by Sir Walter Burley-Griffin), to the Plant Accelerator at the University of Adelaide’s Waite Campus. All promise to reward the visitor with a rare glimpse behind the facades of some generally hidden Adelaide buildings.
CEO of History SA, Margaret Anderson, said: ‘Once again we look forward to more opportunities to go behind the scenes of Adelaide’s proud architectural heritage as well as discovering new and exciting examples of innovative building design. Open House Adelaide is a wonderful event with which to start About Time - South Australia’s month-long History Festival.’
Other buildings on offer include:
- SA’s tallest building Westpac House
- UniSA’s award winning Kaurna Building
- a behind the scenes tour of the City fire station
