We say ‘Pink Floyd’ and you think of an English rock band that knew no boundaries; that experimented with sound and words to become one of the most influential groups in pop music history. It should therefore come as no surprise that this revolutionary band has inspired a competition aiming to translate the band’s music philosophy into the tangible.
‘A House for Pink Floyd’ is an international architecture contest focusing on the creation of architectural objects that transcend rules and standardisation, and innovates through itself. Open to all architects, and architecture and design students, participants are offered maximum freedom with their designs and creations, and face no constraints in regard to site, program or size.
Riding on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s quote, “Architecture is frozen music,” the theme of the contest is the reconnection of architecture to a discipline that is already associated to it in traditional aesthetics – both architecture and music are considered to be the only “abstract” arts not explicitly inspired by nature.
The music-architecture relation as a natural combination is furthermore relevant in this case, with three out of four of Pink Floyd’s founding members having studied architecture.
As with Pink Floyd’s music and performances, the promotion of avant-garde architecture that crosses aesthetical, cultural, political and social boundaries is at the core of the contest. Seeking to stretch the creativity of all participants, it challenges architects and designers to create projects that will evoke a message and tone of mind that “approaches the effect of music.”
Launched by International Competitions in Architecture (ICARCH) in collaboration with Atelierul de Proiectare (AdeP – Design Studio) Magazine, the participating projects will be evaluated and judged by an international jury.
All projects will be featured on the ICARCH's website, and the winning work will be published in AdeP Magazine. The contest will also be showcased in an exhibition hosted by the University of Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu of Bucharest from 20 August to 10 September 2013.
The final date for registration is 1 July 2013, and the deadline for all submissions is 31 July 2013.
