Victorians in BAL-FZ, the highest bushfire attack level under the Australian Standard for building in bushfire prone areas, now have a window available.

The Building Commission has announced that a combined window and screen system manufactured for use in BAL-FZ has been released onto the market that meets the criteria of a system tested by the Building Commission to the Australian Standard.

Tony Arnel, building commissioner, says "The system was reviewed by a consultant fire safety and risk engineer whose report indicates that the screen, in combination with a window with specified properties, meets the technical requirements identified as safe for use in BAL-FZ by the Commission's research."

According to Arnel, the Commission expects several manufacturers will meet the design criteria to meet the building regulations.

"The technical specifications of the design criteria were made available to window and screen manufacturers late last year," he said. "It is promising that in a short timeframe we have already seen one window and screen system meet the requirements and come to the market."
