Last week, the 2017 World Architecture Festival (WAF) took place in Berlin. A number of Australian projects were recognised during the three days of the program, including East Sydney Early Learning Centre (ESELC) by Andrew Burges Architects, the EY Centre by FJMT, and Sydney Fish Markets by Allen Jack+Cottier (AJ+C) and NH Architecture.
On the third day of the festival, the final awards were distributed. Among these were two Australian projects: Sydney Fish Markets by AJ+C and NH Architecture, and the Fitzroy Crossing Renal Hostel by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects.
AJ+C and NH Architecture’s reference design for the Sydney Fish Markets was awarded the Future Project of the Year title for “the great transformation it offers to the area”. The project also won the Masterplanning – Future Projects category on day two of WAF.

The Fitzroy Crossing Renal Hostel by Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects was recognised with the Best Use of Colour Prize. The project – which the judges found the use of colour to be “sensitive, elegant and well-balanced” – is a long-term accommodation facility for Aboriginal people from outlying communities receiving renal dialysis.

Another award that was given out on the final day was the prestigious World Building of the Year. This year, the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Post-Earthquake Reconstruction Project in Guangming Village took out the coveted prize.
