Statistically speaking, Australia’s best chance at the 2016 World Architecture Festival Awards will be in the House category where five Australian projects have been shortlisted.
Single dwelling projects from Ian Moore, Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects, Robin Williams Architect and Smart Design Studio have been pitted against 12 others from international architects including the Uk’s Henning Stummel Architects, Poland’s Robert Konieczny and Brazil’s Studio Mk27, among others.
If it were a draw-of-the-hat then Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects (IPHA) would be the most confident leading up to the awards to be announced in November, having two projects shortlisted, both of which are former Sustainability Awards finalists and from Western Australia. But it isn’t, and IPHA’s Nannup Holiday House and CASA31_4 Room House will face strong competition from award winning projects from all over the world, not least Robin Williams Architect’s Villa Marittima, St Andrews Beach house in Victoria, Smart Design Studio’s Indigo Slam, which was recently crowned NSW’s best new residence, and Ian Moore’s McLeod House in Sydney.

SHORT OF LAST YEAR'S EFFORTS
Just over 20 Australian projects have been shortlisted across the board for the 2016 WAFs, which is down from last year’s giant effort of 37, but still strong compared to most countries. The biggest causality for Australia in the 2016 program is in the Higher Education and Research category which has only one shortlisted Australian project compared to eight in 2015. Woods Bagot’s University of Sydney Business School in Sydney will be up against 12 other projects in that category.
Other strengths this year for Australia are the Housing Category and the Office and Mixed Use categories which have three, two and two projects shortlisted respectively.
All types and sizes of architectural projects are represented on the 343-strong shortlist, with entries ranging from private homes, shops and schools to large commercial developments and ambitious landscape projects.
The architectural practices behind each project will battle it out in live judging sessions to be held at the World Architecture Festival in Berlin, 16-18 November. All will be hoping to be crowned winners of one of 32 categories and go on to compete for the ultimate accolades of ‘World Building of the Year’ and ‘Future Project of the Year’.
