Sydney’s Barangaroo development has won the top award at this year’s prestigious American Architecture Prize.
The annual awards program aims to recognise “individuals and teams who have made a substantial contribution to all areas of architecture”. Each year, three ‘best of the best’ awards are given out in recognition of what the jury deems to be the best project from each discipline: architecture, interior architecture and landscape architecture.
At the 2017 awards, the Barangaroo Reserve project by PWP Landscape Architecture was deemed the best Landscape Design of the Year. The jury described Barangaroo Reserve as “a globally significant, 22-hectare waterfront renewal project that redefines Sydney Harbour and its Central Business District… Barangaroo Reserve transforms a huge expanse of empty concrete into humane, usable space, marking the transformation of an industrialized [sic] site into a modern reinvention of its more sustainable past.”

The other two projects to be awarded the top prizes were Hengqin International Financial Center by Aedes Limited, which won the Architectural Design of the Year; and The Attic – Flamingo Shanghai Office by Neri&hu Design and Research Office, which took out Interior Design of the Year.
Barangaroo Reserve wasn’t the only Australian project to be recognised at the international awards. A total of nine Australian projects received prizes, including FJMT’s EY Centre, which took out two separate awards in the Commercial and Tall Buildings categories. In addition to the Landscape Design of the Year prize, Barangaroo Reserve was awarded in the Public and Large-scale Landscape Projects categories.
