Mackay's Bluewater Lagoon has been named one of the region's best examples of architectural design.

Earlier this month, AECOM won an Australian Institute of Architects North Queensland commendation in Townsville for its work on the lagoon's built form, including the amenities block, plant room, administration building, kiosk and shade structures.

The local identity played a major part in the design of the lagoon and its buildings, which aims to reflect elements of the environment, such as the beach, river and rainforest.

"The lagoon's built forms extend into the landscape like fingers, or promontories, creating complete engagement between the buildings and the landscape," says AECOM project architect, Josephine MacLeod.

"The simple forms of the pavilions create a gateway into the site, framing the views to the lagoon, and this composition, coupled with a contemporary, relaxed architectural aesthetic provides a unique local identity for the precinct.

"A filigree of cantilevered roof purlins has also been integrated into the shade structures to create distinct palm-like shade patterning, a response to the region's tropical landscape."

Located adjacent to Mackay's Caneland Shopping Centre and overlooking the Pioneer River, the Bluewater Lagoon covers an area equivalent to three 50m swimming pools.
