Planning Minister, Matthew Guy has announced the approval of a precinct structure plan for Armstrong Creek West, which will result in a $2 billion investment in the local building and housing industry.
"This is one of the fastest growing areas in Australia and will be instrumental in enhancing the liveability of the Geelong area by providing affordable homes for local families," Mr Guy said.
"The Victorian Coalition Government is delivering on its commitment to improve the economic and social wellbeing of our regions for generations to come."
Located on the southern edge of Geelong, Armstrong Creek West will accommodate 5,800 new homes with areas of open space including parkland, running and cycling tracks and community facilities.
The Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Area will ultimately accommodate up to 60,000 people and provide approximately 22,000 jobs.
The planning scheme amendment was progressed as a ministerial amendment, at Greater Geelong City Council's request.
Member for South Barwon Andrew Katos applauded the approval.
"Armstrong Creek West provides for significant areas of local and neighbourhood open space and community facilities to support this new part of Geelong," Mr Katos said.
"To ensure fairness and transparency the process included targeted consultation and an independent expert Advisory Committee to consider submissions and to provide me with advice on the merits of the proposal," Mr Guy said.
The Coalition Government has also provided $100,000 for strategic planning for the Armstrong Creek Town Centre and the Horseshoe Bend residential precinct which are both in preliminary planning stages.
