Adelaide will host the inaugural Open House Adelaide on the weekend of 19 and 20 May 2012. Open House Adelaide is part of the international Open House program, which provides a weekend for significant buildings - heritage, working and cutting-edge design — to be open to the public for free.
This new component of the About Time: South Australia’s History Festival, which is running throughout May, will build on the previous ‘Open Doors: Unlocking History’ section of the program.
The inclusion of contemporary architecture, sustainable design and engineering, as well as heritage in the Open House Adelaide weekend, will contribute to public understanding and discussion of the built fabric of Adelaide, past, present and future.
Her Majesty'sTheatre will be open to the public for tours as part of the OpenHouse Adelaide event.
Forty-eight buildings will open as part of the event. They range from the oldest purpose-built theatre on mainland Australia to a vertically integrated residential project of 42 apartments over seven levels, that integrates energy, water and waste environmental sustainability.
Director of History SA, Margaret Anderson, said, “Adelaide is known for its striking heritage architecture, but Open House Adelaide will challenge long-standing perceptions of the city by also showcasing stunning cutting-edge buildings. The event adds a dynamic new dimension by linking Adelaide’s history and heritage with contemporary design and innovation.”
