American hardwoods have experienced a significant increase in demand over the last 2 years in Australia, according to The American Hardwood Export Council.

The council sys an escalation in interest in American hardwoods from the architectural and design communities, coupled with a favourable exchange rate, has seen a growth in volume of shipments of American lumber to Australia of 36 per cent to over 7,700 cubic metres in 2011 from 2010.

US hardwood veneers have also experienced a boom with those shipped to Australia and New Zealand in 2011 rising by over 100 per cent from the previous year to AUD 2.99 million. Veneers from species including white oak, maple and walnut are reported to be rapidly gaining popularity.

American white oak currently accounts for over 80 per cent of all shipments to Australia, most commonly used for flooring, stairs, joinery and furniture. However, the council is now says other lesser-known species, including ash, red oak and tulipwood are generating interest and further growth is anticipated.
