The Australian Reinforcing Company (ARC) has been contracted by HYLC Joint Venture to provide the reinforcing steel requirements of the South Australia’s new Royal Adelaide Hospital.
Set to replace the existing facility, which opened in 1840, the new $1.85 billion, 10-hectare facility will be the State’s flagship public hospital. It will offer a full range of clinical services for the local community, including more operating theatres, intensive care beds and emergency care capacity, as well as providing Statewide speciality services like major burns, trauma, spinal, renal and neurosurgery.
The Hospital will remain a major teaching facility and will be co-located with the new South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute—forming a major medical research hub.
“It is the largest building project in South Australia for at least 20 years,” said ARC’s South Australia Manager Tony Hilbig.
“ARC will be supplying 8,000 tonnes of reinforcing steel over 12 months. This involves working to short lead times, providing consistent quality of output and ensuring watertight logistics such as precise delivery timing. We have doubled our Adelaide-based production and recruited eight staff to work on ARC’s part of the project, which will run until June 2014.”
The facility will use cutting-edge, environmentally sensitive architectural design to create positive surroundings for patients and staff. All rooms will have access to natural light and internal gardens on balconies and the roof.
In keeping with these environmental goals, ARC will contribute to the Hospital’s pursuit of a Green Star rating by supplying reinforcing steel that meets stringent criteria set by the Green Building Council of Australia.
