Standing at 234 metres high, and with a total of 86,000 square metres of commercial space across 45 levels, the new BHP Billiton Office Tower is the largest commercial building in Perth, Western Australia.
During its construction process, some of the building’s glass panels were damaged by extensive grinder sparks from the fabrication of stainless steel finished pylons. There were also a number of panels that had been scratched during installation, resulting in the need to restore or replace the glass.
EnduroShield WA was chosen to repair the glass facading after successfully demonstrating their high level of technical knowledge and experience in glass restoration with their advanced EnduroShield Restoration System.
Kevin Will, Construction Manager on the BHP Billiton site, said he was impressed with how EnduroShield removed the scratches from the BHP Billiton Tower glass.
“l'm the Construction Manager on this job, but l'm a glazier by trade. And up until now, l've never known anyone who could remove grinder spark scratches from glass panels.”
With only 4 weeks before the handover of the completed building to BHP Billiton, many of the 4.5 metre high by 1.8 metre wide custom-built double glazed units in the main lobby were severely pitted by welds from grinders.
“We had no option but to change the glass, but we didn't have the time to bring this custom made glass in from overseas. The cost to change the glass would have been $240,000. We had to find another option and it had to be a quick one,” said Kevin Will.
“I looked for glass polishers and I found EnduroShield. The EnduroShield WA team came to the site straight away. They assessed the damage and immediately said they could fix it.
“I was sceptical at first because I didn't think the removal of welding marks on glass was possible, but the EnduroShield team did just that. Welding marks were removed from 23 large glass panels.
“The job was completed on time, with EnduroShield WA working after hours to fit in with our building maintenance schedules and we were able to hand over to BHP Billiton at the allocated time,” Mr Will said.
