PTA Architecture's design philosophy for the new Shepparton 30 room extension involved developing a single storey addition to the existing 60 room Mercy Health Aged Care Facility that ensured a vibrant and active environment, responding to residents both internally and externally.
The new building was designed around an internal courtyard, providing residents with wandering paths and restful seating constructed of PGH bricks with double bullnose capping, emulating the natural terrain of Central Victoria.
The external masonry facades were broken up to avoid monotony, typical of such long elevations. The bedrooms feature external brick walling interspersed with vibrant colour infills, incorporating the windows and sub-sill. Patterns have also been used in the brickwork to bring out the nature of the individual rooms.
PGH bricks were selected by PTA Architecture on the basis of colour, texture, thermal properties and their enduring history in residential country building.
Sand bricks from the PGH Foundations collection were selected to provide a smooth finish consistent with the existing built form.
Basmati bricks from the PGH Organic collection were chosen for their tumbled appearance and light colour, which reflect the earthy sun soaked feel of the country. Both the smooth and rough bricks were blended together to instil a feeling of ageing in the brick wall commensurate with traditional masonry of the region.
Pewter bricks from the PGH Alchemy collection were selected by PTA Architecture for their strong metallic finish
and stack bond was used to solidify their colour and form. They have also been used as a brick parapet over the living room, which exposes the transparent inner glazed skin below and simultaneously ensures a sense of security for the residents inside.
