The Lilyfield Housing Redevelopment in Sydney, designed by HBO+EMTB is the first housing project in Australia to receive a 5 Star Green Star rating under the Green Building Council of Australia's (GBCA) Multi Unit Residential Pilot tool.

The project comprises 25 one-bedroom units, 57 two-bedroom units and six three-bedroom units.

HBO+EMTB director, Gustavo Thiermann, says "Because the project is close to the inner-west light rail and there is adequate street parking we were able to convince council that there was no need for car spaces or garaging. This enabled us to significantly increase the yield. The original concept allowed for 40 apartments and we were able to increase it to 88 apartments."

The project features classic passive solar design attributes, with all units having north or east facing living areas and natural cross ventilation. Solar design features include photovoltaic cells for solar hot water and on-site production of electricity.

Materials specified have been chosen for their ESD qualities including solid floors exposed to the northern sun for thermal mass and low-E glass in all east and west facades.

The property has also become the first Multi Unit Residential project in NSW to gain a Green Star rating and the first social housing scheme anywhere in Australia to gain a Green Star rating.

Construction has only recently started and is scheduled for completion in approximately 12 months.
