Brookfield Multiplex is celebrating the topping out milestone of the University of Sydney's new $385 million building.
Construction of the building, which will form part of the Charles Perkins Centre at its Camperdown Campus in New South Wales, commenced in March, 2012 and has just reached the rooftop level.
Spanning 46,700 square metres the new building will accommodate 950 researchers and 1,455 undergraduates and will provide a combination of wet and dry laboratory spaces, new imaging and flow cytometry facilities, including live cell imaging, clinical research facilities and a biobank.
"Construction is on target for completion prior to the beginning of the 2014 academic year, said David Ghannoum, Regional Managing Director NSW, Brookfield Multiplex.”
“We have overcome many challenges over the past 12 months including working within an active and operating University campus with minimum disruption to the daily life of both academics and students."
Located in close proximity to the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and the faculties of Medicine, Science and Veterinary Science, the centre will cater for multidisciplinary research across biomedical sciences, bioinformatic and computational biology as well as clinical research and behavioral science.
The centre is named in honour of the late Charles Perkins, a University of Sydney graduate who was the first indigenous Australian to graduate from the university in 1966, and a recipient of an honorary doctorate from the University in 2000.
