Former Architectural Review editor-in-chief Andrew Mackenzie of CityLab has been appointed as the competition adviser.

Stage one of the competition will open in February 2013 with stage two to follow with a shortlist.

Up to three shortlisted teams will receive $15,000 to undertake design development of their stage one submissions. At the end of stage two an independent jury will select a winner who will be contracted to complete design development of their winning submitted design, through to completion of the redevelopment.

The jury has been announced as made up of Catherin Bull, Tanya Court, Ben Hewett, Henry Inat, Debra Just and Philip Thalis.

The website states that the competition aims to re-energise the Square and its surrounds, preserve its heritage and improve the area to function as a 'popular beachside destination.'

Registrations will open 14 January 2013 with forms available for download from the website.
