A high school south of Cairns has achieved an environmental first for Queensland, with the installation of a new lighting system that will cut energy costs by $1,200 a year, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 5 tonnes per annum and increase environmental awareness in the school community.

Approximately 160 old fluorescent lights in the Gordonvale High School Library were replaced with energy efficient lamps which will reduce power consumption by more than 30 per cent, improve light levels and extend maintenance cycles.

The installation was made possible with the use of Save-It-Easy adaptor systems from Ilum-a-Lite, enabling the energy efficient fluorescent tubes to be placed in existing fittings.

CEO of Ilum-a-Lite, Mark Rutherford, says the Save-It-Easy adaptors were fitted to one end of the new 28W T5 lamps so they could be fitted into existing T8 light fittings. "The tube and adaptor sets are quick and easy to fit and don't require a professional electrician, complicated re-wiring or new fittings, saving the school time and money and minimising disruption."
