Renowned figure in modernist architecture, Fumihiko Maki will be visiting Australia in June for the 2013 C+A TALKS.
Maki, who is being brought to Australia by Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia for a three-city tour, speaks in Brisbane on June 17, Sydney on June 18 and Melbourne on June 20.
The 1993 Pritzker Architecture Prize winner and AIA Honorary Fellow will talk about his design philosophy, drawing on examples from Maki and Associates’ internationally renowned portfolio.
Included in that portfolio is Tower 4 of the World Trade Centre redevelopment, currently nearing completion in New York.
Born in Tokyo in 1928, Maki studied with Kenzo Tange at the University of Tokyo before completing his Masters at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
After working and teaching in the United States, he returned to Japan in 1965 to establish his own practice.
Maki and Associates boasts an extensive catalogue of work, including award-winning projects such as the Yerba Buena Centre for the Arts in San Francisco, the Republic Polytechnic in Singapore, and the Hillside Terrace and Mihara Performing Arts Centre in Japan.
Current international projects include MediaCorp, Singapore (2015), Bihar Museum, India (2015), Shenzen Sea World Cultural Arts Centre, China (2015), the United Nations Consolidation Building, New York (2016), and Block 20-02 Office Tower, Beirut (2017).
