Dr Fiona Hanlon has been appointed Chair of the Building Practitioners Board (BPB), the independent statutory body that oversees the quality and standard of professional services in the Victorian building industry.

Dr Hanlon has held senior public service positions and has experience in doing investigatory and disciplinary inquiries and hearings.

Victorian Building Authority (VBA) Chair and Chief Commissioner, Mr Bill Kusznirczuk, welcomed Dr Hanlon to the position.

“Dr Hanlon will continue the fair and open decision-making of the Board and will ensure proper professional industry standards are maintained to provide protection to consumers,” Mr Kusznirczuk said.

Dr Hanlon has also held senior positions in the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet and the Department of Justice.  While at Justice, she was a member of the department’s capital works committee and chaired the project control group for the design and construction of the Victorian Children’s Court.

Mr Kusznirczuk said Dr Hanlon had a strong connection to the building industry: “She is the daughter of an electrician and has had personal experiences as a consumer of building services, which she says have been good experiences. Her aim is that every consumer should have that same experience of the building industry.”

Dr Hanlon has a PhD and Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne and Bachelor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Laws degrees from Monash University. She is a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria and the High Court of Australia and holds a current practising certificate as a lawyer. She is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors Diploma Course.

Dr Hanlon is also a member of three not-for-profit boards, one of which she chairs.
