Contract Administrators, Project Managers and Electricians are in demand at present in Australia’s construction market according to recruiting experts Hays Construction.
The recruiter has released its latest Hays Quarterly Hotspots list of jobs in demand, which points towards the evolution of Australia’s job market.
“The gloss has gone off the resources and mining sector, and we are moving away from a two-speed economy to a system of micro-economies that are creating pockets of employment opportunities – even in the most challenged sectors,” says Simon Bristow, Senior Regional Director of Hays Construction.
“Demand is not evident in every function in every location, but there are pockets of specific skill shortages,” he said.
“Employers are replacing departing staff and making selective staff investments in roles that can add immediate value to their business.”
But he warns that employers have high expectations when they recruit. “Employers will only make job offers to the top tier candidates. They are still looking for industry specific skills and background that matches their industry.
“Job losses tend to be more visible than job gains, but we are seeing more jobs created than lost and there is still tempered confidence in the market and in a number of sectors.”
According to the Hays Quarterly Hotspots list, demand exists for Foremen/women, Leading Hands, Contract Administrators, Project Managers and OHS, Project Control and engineering compliance specialists in the New South Wales construction market.
In Northern Territory’s construction market Engineering Surveyors and Project Managers who are locally-based and understand the local market are being sought after in order to limit relocation costs and reduce the timescale between offer and commencement date.
In the Queensland construction market, experienced high rise Project Managers, Contracts Administrators and Project Engineers are sought in Brisbane, Civil Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Contract Administrators, Estimators, Site Engineers & Supervisors are needed on the Sunshine Coast for Queensland Main Road flood repair works, and Civil Project Engineers and Civil Project Managers with at least four years experience on TMR projects are in high demand in the state's North.
Specialist Building Project Managers with front end client/commercial and buildability skills are also required throughout the state.
In Western Australia, the trade and labour market is searching for Tower Crane Operators, Dogman / Riggers, Carpenters, Electricians, Plumbers and skilled Labourers as Perth’s construction sector is continues to gain momentum.
Most of the areas in demand in Queensland’s trade and labour market are operators in the civil construction industry in regional Queensland, predominantly western Queensland with the upgrade of roads to help service the burgeoning gas sector. Furthermore there also continues to be work for construction trades in Central Queensland on flood rehabilitation works.
Electricians and Heavy Diesel Fitters, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Auto Electricians are two areas in Northern Territory’s trade and labour market where, according to Hays, candidates remain in short supply.
