The Design Excellence Award for the 2008 Building Designers Association National Building Design was won by Queensland designer Chris Clout for his Japan House project.

The house presents as a collection of Asian inspired pavilions with stacked stone and water used through out, including a central courtyard pool area with stone feature waterfall.

Acting as the crux of the home, the living area opens on both sides to the outdoor areas, intertwining indoor/ outdoor living. The shoji screen style doors and rich timber detailing further enhance the Oriental inspiration of the home.
