A crane operator-rigger was killed at a construction site in Karratha this morning (Wednesday 13 July).

The man was working at the Pelago West Apartments project in the centre of Karratha when it he was believed to have been crushed by a large concrete soakwell lid that reportedly fell while being lifted by a crane.

The West reported that Worksafe inspectors travelled to the site to interview witnesses and investigate the circumstances of the accident.

It is the second death in the region in as many weeks.

Australian Worker’s Union North West organiser Mark Brien urged the Government to increase the number of safety inspectors based in the Pilbara.

“Again today, we’ve had another unnecessary fatality on a project in the Pilbara and our condolences go out to the family and mates of the unfortunate person,” he said.

“We call on the Government to put more inspectors on and to ensure that our workplaces are as safe as can be.”
