A new General Manager for the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has been appointed, with Chairman John Thwaites welcoming the announcement.

Neil Savery, the current Victorian Deputy Building and Plumbing Industry Commissioner, has been appointed to the General Manager role, effective 7 January 2013.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to say that we look forward to working with Neil as the ABCB moves forward with its challenging regulatory reform agenda.  Neil’s extensive experience and knowledge of government and industry I am sure will serve us extremely well,”  Mr Thwaites said.

Prior to his current role with the Victorian government, Mr Savery was Chief Executive of the ACT Planning and Land Authority, Director of Waterfront Geelong and Special Projects, Executive Director of Planning South Australia and has qualifications in town planning, urban design and ecologically sustainable development.

Additionally, Mr Savery is a former Chair of the National Planning Officials Group, Adjunct Professor in Urban Design at Canberra University, immediate-past National President of the Planning Institute of Australia and a Board member of the ABCB for the most of the last decade.

Mr Thwaites also acknowledged the contribution of long-serving and recently retired former General Manager, Ivan Donaldson.
