A new energy efficient lighting system in Pitt Street Mall, Sydney is the final stage in the City's refurbishment of the Mall.
The decorative new catenary lighting system is suspended 14 metres above the ground and consists of 23 custom-made light fittings spaced seven metres apart along the entire length of the mall.
Each fitting contains downlights that automatically adjust and brighten as day becomes night, as well as decorative lights that can be programmed with a variety of colours and designs.
The Pitt Street Mall catenary lighting project team included architects Tony Caro Architecture, head contractors Westfield Design & Construction, cabling manufacturers Ronstan International, cabling installers Pacific Rigging, lighting manufacturers 3s Lighting, and lighting installers FIP Electrical.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the new lighting network would make Pitt Street Mall more attractive for shoppers, workers and visitors doing the Christmas period and throughout the year.
“With more than 65,000 pedestrians passing through it each day, Pitt Street Mall is the busiest retail precinct in Sydney,” Moore said.
“The City’s refurbishment has included new paving, trees to provide shade, seating and drinking fountains, and has transformed the mall into a people-friendly destination for meeting friends, taking a break during a busy shopping trip, or sitting and watching the world go by.
“The new lights, which are energy-efficient and complement the colourful shopfronts along the mall, are the perfect addition to this world-class retail experience."
