Mirvac and Landcorp have lodged the Development Plan this week for the Mulataga residential community in Karratha, seeking approval from the Shire of Roeburne to establish the district and local structure planning framework for this masterplanned community.

The Mulataga Development Plan outlines the vision for the innovative project, which will be the first to link Karratha with Nickol Bay - creating the region's first coastal village.

With over 2km of coastal frontage, it will set a new benchmark for sustainable living in the Pilbara, offering a variety of living options.

Mulataga will ultimately comprise up to 2,000 residential dwellings with a mix of housing choices to meet the future needs of the Karratha community.

The Development Plan was created following the successful Planning Design Forum and a series of community consultations earlier this year.

Mirvac National General Manager of Resource Partnerships, Evan Campbell, said Mulataga would be an 'innovative and transformative' development, which would facilitate Karratha's transition from a regional town into a city.

"Mulataga will be one of the first projects to be developed under the new Pilbara Cities initiative, and as such we are looking to set the bar high by creating a community that is highly functional in all aspects, including social integration, landscape connectivity, and the quality of housing," he said.

The Development Plan outlines four elements of design that will help shape the Mulataga community - improved amenity and lifestyle choices, the creation of 'activity nodes’ to help the community grow, development of residential villages and the delivery of high quality public open spaces.

Mr Campbell said the integration of these elements is key to creating a thriving community.

"The activity nodes will be supported by a primary school, community and recreational facilities to provide for the local residents.

"The coastal node will comprise approximately 500sqm of retail floor space and is to become a popular hub for shopping and dining alongside the waters of Nickol Bay.

"The Mulataga project will have a significant percentage of land dedicated as public open space, including landscaped parks, natural reserves and the preservation of key Aboriginal heritage areas.”

Mirvac is yet to finalise details - including pricing and lot sizes - for the first stage of the Mulataga development, but expects to release further information in early 2013 - pending relevant statutory approvals.

Mulataga is part of the $1.5 billion Karratha City of the North development, which also includes a rejuvenation of  the town centre to include a new commercial and retail hub, known as The Quarter.
