The Australian Government’s $14.7 billion cash injection into school infrastructure is a golden opportunity to go green, says the nation’s leading green building organisation.

The Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) welcomed the economic stimulus package, which includes $14.7 billion over the next two years to construct or upgrade a building in every one of the nation's schools.

“Every school in the country will receive $200,000 to upgrade existing or build new facilities. We encourage schools to think green when they begin to plan their projects,” says the GBCA’s chief executive, Romilly Madew.

“We now have solid international research which confirms that green schools and universities can enhance student learning, create a better workplace for teachers and boost a school’s competitiveness,”

Madew says. “Green schools reduce operating costs, provide a healthier learning environment for students, and support a more sustainable community.”
