Due to the ongoing construction of new buildings and facilities at Mackay Base Hospital, a covered walkway around the hospital was deemed essential.
In order to provide this necessary overhead protection for all staff, patients and visitors, Baulderstone contracted Royal Wolf to provide shipping containers that would provide an effective solution.
National Building and Construction Manager Andrew Strachan explained, “In accordance with the hospital’s requirements to remain operational during the construction of new buildings and facilities, and to ensure the safety of its patients, staff and visitors, Baulderstone contacted Royal Wolf to install 195 metres of hoardings.”
The company delivered a series of stock-item shipping containers and created a ‘L’ shaped hoardings which is now used on a regular basis by staff and patients of the hospital.
Apart from the cost-effectiveness of the products, the containers were considered the for the project due to their portability and strength.
As the hospital required the construction to have a minimal impact on normal operations, the immediate availability of the hoardings assisted in the installation occurring over three weekends to cut down disruption to the hospital.
Mackay is also located in a cyclone area which meant that durability and a high level of resistance to natural disasters was essential.
Strachan adds, “the Royal Wolf containers used on this project carry a 10 KPA rating to ensure overhead protection, and to further protect against natural disasters the hoardings were secured with a fully engineered tie down system of 35 one-tonne concrete blocks.”
The solution provided will remain in place until the construction project is completed in 2013.
Royal Wolf provides shipping container solutions to industries as broad as mining, construction, defence, retail and entertainment.
