The industry launch of the Smarter Small Home, held on April 1, saw the unveiling of a two-storey, three bedroom home, built inside an aircraft hangar in Brisbane. Key property industry identities and representatives from councils across Australia attended the launch, which was hosted by James Hardie.

According to Kevin Doodney from LJ Hooker Land Marketing, the concept behind the home was to present a smart and sustainable home that average Australians can afford without sacrificing "the backyard, the environment or the community's street appeal."

Doodney believes that there is a responsibility for those in the property industry to offer houses that home buyers can be proud of without forcing them into serious mortgage stress. According to Doodney, the new concept home is the first of many steps that the industry must consider in order to deal with a sliding economy and generational changes in housing.
