The WA Government has launched the first projects in master planned community in Albany as part of its social housing strategy, which aims to provide 20,000 houses by 2020 through public and private partnerships.

The Oyster Harbour community in Albany has opened up 156 lots so far, with the next stage of development, comprising 50 lots, to be released in early 2011.

In Albany the first project will be 12 units, being built through the Commonwealth Stimulus Social Housing National Partnership Agreement.

The contract has been awarded to Chadwick Builders, and is joint venture between the Department of Housing and Heath Development Company which will develop 2,300 lots on 212ha of land.

The WA Government will launch its affordable housing strategy before the end of 2010, which aims to provide affordable housing to West Australians.
