BlueScope Steel’s architectural publication is celebrating its 30-year anniversary of tracking the development of steel as a key element in Australian architecture.

Steel Profile has tracked the accomplishments of Australia’s foremost steel-inspired architects and charted the rise and now default acceptance of steel as a dynamic element of Australian architecture.

The Anniversary Issue, the 110th edition of the magazine, was distributed in tandem with the the Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards this month, which were also launched in 1981.

The inaugural issue of Steel Profile featured a story on an exciting emerging architect, Glenn Murcutt, who was bestowed with The National Award for Enduring Architecture this year, and the anniversary issue has revisited some of Murcutt’s projects and many achievements.

BlueScope Steel editor, Kristin Camery, commented: “From its very first issue, this magazine has acquired a steady rhythm and growing confidence.

“We’re very proud of its status as a collectable architectural reference and its longevity is testimony to the relevance of steel architecture in this country. Every architect featured in the magazine has in some way contributed and we wish to thank the great many people who have shared their ideas and energy throughout our history.”

Remarking on the accomplishment, BVN Architecture principal and regular contributor to the magazine, James Grose, said “Steel Profile’s coverage of steel architecture projects has been one of the important vehicles for observing an evolving regional language — ideas built on the utilitarian and functional precepts of Australia’s rural tradition.

“The magazine has led commentary on innovative steel design through great photography and great writing about Australian architecture.
