utomation systems, such as HPM’s iControl are becoming increasingly popular in the aged care market. The ability to have more central control over sub-systems such as lighting and climate control is piquing the interest of aged care workers, facility managers and developers. Programmed lighting sequences as well as the use of sensors to activate lighting or air-conditioning saves energy and is more convenient for occupants because they don’t have to fiddle with switches they can find difficult to use.

As some people have difficulty using standard switches, the large switch surfaces and smooth switching action of HPM’s iComo and Como ranges of switches and power outlets make them a popular choice for aged care facilities. Aesthetically the same, iComo is used exclusively in conjunction with the iControl automation systems and Como is used with conventional wiring. With distinctive European styling and optional neon indicators, Como switches are easy to see and use.

Luckily, degrees of automation and the associated benefits can be achieved within conventional wiring systems by using products such as HPM’s 630/5 movement sensor. The ceiling mounted 630/5 has a 360 degree field of view and manual override option. When connected, it will automatically activate lighting when movement is detected.

Another user friendly product which can be installed within conventional wiring systems is the HPM Superdimmer — a light dimmer that can be operated by a remote control or sensitive touchpad. Rated 400VA, these dimmers have adjustable ramp-up and ramp-down times and are available in the versatile Excel styling, as well as the premium finish of the Architectural Metal range.

HPM products are available through electrical wholesalers and systems integrators nationally.
