The Building Designers Association of Victoria (BDAV) has launched its 18th Building Design Awards.

The awards range of categories includes residential design, interior design, heritage conservation, energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, and non-residential design, including commercial, industrial, hospitality and public buildings.

The Building Design of the Year is selected as the most outstanding submission from the category award winners.

Award winners will be announced at the BDAV’s Annual Dinner on 27 July 2013 and profiled in Winning Design, a popular annual magazine published by the BDAV and enjoyed by Victorians looking to build or renovate.

The BDAV’s People’s Choice Awards gives the public the chance to vote for their favourite project entered. Votes can be submitted at www.bdav.org.au between 3 June 2013 and 13 July 2013.

BDAV President Michael O’Sullivan said the awards continue to showcase the expertise of building designers and encourage higher standards of excellence in design.

“The BDAV Building Design Awards reflect the high calibre of building design offered to Victorians, and our judges continue to be amazed by the standard of entries received each year.” O’Sullivan said.

“The Awards gives our members a deserved opportunity to be recognised for their great work, and to share their passion for building design with their industry peers and the broader community.”

Entries are judged on the quality of the design process with a focus on design excellence, taking into account elements such as architectural form, neighbourhood or landscape context, environmental sustainability, cost-effectiveness and innovative use of materials and technology.

The Awards are open to all building designers who are Full Members of the BDAV who are Registered Building Practitioners or Registered Architects. The only exception is entrants in the Student Category, who must be third-year students in the Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) at a recognised TAFE institution.

The winner of the BDAV’s 10-Star Challenge will also be announced at the Annual Dinner. The 10-Star Challenge invites the building design fraternity to conceptualise 10-Star energy-efficient homes that combine admirable design with efficient planning solutions and creative use of materials. Entry submissions for the 10-Star Challenge close on 29 April 2013.
