Brookfield Multiplex has completed the third and final stage of the $128 million Auburn Hospital redevelopment at Auburn in New South Wales.
The recipient of the NSW MBA Award for the Best Health Building project $50m -$150m in 2010, it was also completed two months ahead of schedule.
The four year redevelopment comprised the demolition of the existing hospital and subsequent design and construction of a new hospital and car park.
The project also included the design and construction of a new 3,000 sqm community hub which was the final stage of the project.
Designed by Silver Thomas Hanley in association with Hassell, the new hospital incorporates state-of-the-art facilities based on contemporary care models. It comprises two main wings with approximately 25,000 sqms of space and two central courtyards, providing a tranquil area for patients and employees.
The initial design was enhanced after a review with all stakeholders determined the hospital would benefit from being re-orientated, creating a more welcoming entry, reducing overshadowing of neighbouring residences and maximising natural light in the rooms adjacent to the atrium. Improved operating theatre system layouts and better solar access were also incorporated.
Due to the large 5,000 sqm floor plate, the structure was split into four areas allowing Brookfield Multiplex to work on all areas at the same time. This meant that unforseen delays in one area would not delay the delivery of the project.
In addition, the transfer of staff and patients from the old hospital to the new hospital was carefully orchestrated to ensure a seamless transition between rooms and medical equipment, especially for the critically ill. A covered walkway was constructed between the two buildings with vinyl floor, plasterboard walls, handrails and crash rails, lighting and smoke detectors for the patient transfer event.
The hospital provides 24 hour emergency care, acute medical and surgical services, maternity services, allied health and outpatient services while the standalone Community Health Centre provides secondary health care for the local community.
