An ambitious refurbishment of The George hotel, by local firm Warren and Mahoney Architects, has been ranked by Conde Nast Traveller readers as one of the top 20 hotels in Oceania.

Warren and Mahoney completely stripped and rebuilt 37 of the 53 rooms in just 30 days.

The firm used a neutral palate to create a unified feel throughout the hotel, with shots of colour to add interest.

The brief included the introduction of all new furniture, striking coloured chairs and mini-bar trays, and a funky graphic feature wall with tiny holes representing the oak leaves from The George’s parkside setting.

Little touches include soft closing bedside drawers and toilet seats, floor-to-ceiling picture windows in the second and third floor park suites and third floor garden facing rooms, heated floors and make-up mirrors in the bathroom.

Each room has also been fitted with an intuitive energy management system that shuts off lighting when the rooms are unoccupied.

Following the refurbishment, The George was selected as one of Oceania’s top 20 hotels in the 2009 Conde Nast Readers’ Choice Awards.

The George now offers nine executive rooms, 32 premium executive rooms, four junior suites, two residence suites and six park suites.
