Canadian studio Bricault Design has created a plant-covered extension with more than a green aesthetic for a growing family in LA’s Venice district. The addition is covered with living walls on three sides that not only visually link with the green roof and surrounding landscape but contribute to the passive systems that keep the house cool in lieu of air conditioning.
Solar panels supply the home’s power while the green roof provides a solid supply of vegetables, watered by captured rainwater and recycled grey water.
A central sculptural staircase leads up to the green roof but also doubles as a chimney by drawing cool air in at the bottom of the house and out at the top.
The project remodelled the existing 185sqm home, as well as creating a 158sqm addition and courtyard on the rear lane side.
Not afraid to diversify, the firm has designed everything from graphics to chocolate and furniture.
