Hazard lines and symbols form part of the interior space in the just completed Kolbe College Industrial Arts Centre designed by Smith and Tracey Architects.
The building accommodates the college’s metalwork, woodwork, design lab and learning spaces. The Victorian firm created the colourful elements of the building’s interior to represent safety in design.
Diagonal hazard lines are featured on the work room walls, learning street and gallery area studded rubber floor. The gallery space houses three display cases, the base of each is clad in safety signs.
The design lab has custom carpet tiles displaying design related and inspiring words and the desks are various laminates fragmented in sections to again inspire the students.
The chosen laminates are raw colours and textures such as silver metals, black and concrete to play up the industrial feel.
Colour has been kept to neutral in this space so the students work takes precedence however the main feature here is that the walls are painted in whiteboard paint so an idea can be written down at any point.
According to the architects, the idea behind the new Kolbe College Industrial Arts Centre is that ‘everything can be creative, even the space you design in’.
