Carter Williamson’s team has been rewarded with the shortlisting of two of its projects – Wurrungwuri and Rosso Verde – at the Inside World Festival of Interiors, the sister event to the World Architecture Festival.
Both Australian projects, each are a testament to CW’s innate ability to craft outstanding design outcomes for their clients. The practice’s designers and other shortlisted studios across 11 categories will present their design case to a live jury at Marina Bay Sands, who will take that presentation and the formal entry into account before determining winners.
Wurrungwuri (pictured top, below) emerges as an homage to artistic expression, centring around a cylindrical, sculptural stairwell.
The Victorian dwelling has been transformed by the practice, the house was renamed Wurrungwuri ('river's flank'), reminiscent of its connection to sandstone and sea. Comprising four bedrooms, the 19th century home had seen a number of additions that were stripped back by the practice, in favour of a modern extension. The connection between old and new is a bright cylindrical staircase made of intricate ivory bricks.
Rosso Verde (pictured below), a transformation of a warehouse on Gadigal land in Camperdown, embodies quality over quantity. Rejecting the 'bigger is better' ethos, it prioritises room excellence, garden access, and light. A central courtyard carved from the roof brings light and greenery deep into the plan.
The reduction of interior space serves a purposeful goal – not expansion, but a more coherent plan. The structure's evolution uncovers unexpected qualities, creating unique interiors. Formerly a warehouse, it becomes a home enriched with opulent materials, sculptural forms, and warm tones. The courtyard seamlessly integrates with the living, dining, and kitchen area.
A double-height arched void punctures the ceiling, connecting levels with light. Burgundy marble in the kitchen harmonises with brass curtains and greenery, fostering a palette of warmth, sophistication, and tranquillity.
