Parlour, an online space that brings together research, informed opinion and resources on women, equity and architecture, is seeking feedback on issues related to the development of its equitable practice guidelines.

In association with the Australian Institute of Architects, the standards were created to help architectural workplaces facilitate change towards a more equitable profession.

The guidelines aim to address a whole host of issues that small, medium, large and regional practices face, including pay equity, mentorships, equitable recruitment and promotion, career breaks, part-time work, and flexibility and long hours in the industry.

To assist the development of these guidelines, Parlour is collating information on the problems experienced by women and men in Australian architecture, soliciting specific examples and instances from architectural practice that may be used in the final version.  It is therefore encouraging architects to review the draft online, and offer their thoughts and opinions on how to improve the content mix and scope, tone, and usefulness of the policies.

This online consultation will be accompanied by a series of face-to face-workshops held in the months of June and July with stakeholder and reference groups.

Geared towards employers and employees, the equitable practice guidelines are the first of a three-part policy process that includes the creation of two new AIA policies on equity and diversity in the profession.  One will focus on public policies, such as key agendas for the government and the wider community, while the other is an internal policy that will guide and mandate the AIA’s own practices as an organisation.  Both policies are still under development.

The guidelines are set to be released between November and December.  Submit your feedback or find out more about the selection of topics here.
