Cox Architecture has revealed three completed projects which will feature as main venues in the 2018 Commonwealth Games; the Anna Meares Velodrome, the Cairns Convention Centre and the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.

According to Cox Architecture director Richard Coulson, it is important that these venues will continue to be used in the future, serving a purpose beyond major events.

“There is an incredible opportunity for communities to benefit from major sporting events like the upcoming Games through increased tourism, trade, improved stadia and increased infrastructure,” says Coulson.

“However, it is essential that cities undergoing major infrastructure updates or stadia construction consider the local community who should ultimately be more engaged by the urban regeneration of these developments.”

The Anna Meares Velodrome, a track purpose-built for the Games was completed 12 months ahead of schedule, to allow the venue to settle and become an integral part of the local and national cycling communities in Chandler and broader Australia.

The Gold Coast Aquatic Centre was also designed with adaptability in mind, with plans to accommodate increased seating for major swimming carnivals and meets, but serve primarily as a local leisure centre.
