More than 70 submissions from leading architecture practices around the world have entered the architecture design completion for the new landmark commercial towers at Parramatta Square.

Firms from the United States, Uganda, Sydney and Perth make up the 73 designs for stages five and six of the competition.

Concepts range from contempororary interpretations of the traditional office block, to futuristic and sculptural towers, sky-scrapting sky-gardens and DNA helix-shaped buildings of tomorrow.

Lord Mayor Cr John Chedid says, “We’re delighted to see many of Australia’s best architecture firms, responsible for some of the nation’s most awarded and recognised buildings, among these submitting entries.

“At the same time, we’re tremendously excited to see the level of interest from leading offshore practices coming from 17 different countries across the world and keen to work in Parramatta.

“To ensure we get the best result, not just for Parramatta but for the people of Sydney, we’ve asked four of NSW’s most experienced architecture, urban design and property professionals to form a design jury to assess submissions for us,” Chedid says.

NSW Government architect Peter Poulet, City of Sydney director of City Planning, Development & Transport Graham Jahn, and NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure urban design team leader Elisabeth Peet, will join Parramatta City Council’s director of property development Scott Gregg to judge the entries.

Meeting for the first time on Tuesday, the jury will nominate four architecture practices or teams to progress through to the next stage – an invitation-only design excellence competition.

Teams will be notified by 11 November, with final submissions due by 6 December. Each team will receive $30,000 on completion of their design submission. The winning design will be announced by the end of the year.
