Four of the world’s most prominent architects are competing to design James Packer’s $1 billion six-star Crown Tower proposal for Barangaroo in Sydney.

The shortlisted firms include Adrian Smith + Gill Architecture, Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates, Renzo Piano and Wilkinson Eyre Architects.

The architects must have their designs submitted by April with the winner to be announced in May and although there is no prize being offered, the commission has the potential to reach $10 million.

The design brief  must include 350 roooms as well as 100 private luxury apartments, restaurants, retail spaces and executive lounges for VIP gaming.

The judges for the competition will be representatives from Crown, the Barangaroo Delivery Authority and Lend Lease.

Packer told News Limited:

"Sydney deserves one of the world's best hotels and with these amazing architects I'm confident we will see the most iconic building constructed here since the Opera House,"

"I want this hotel resort to be instantly recognisable around the world and feature on postcards and memorabilia promoting Sydney. That's how you attract international tourists, create jobs and put Sydney on the map."

All of the architects shortlisted are award winning international architects.

Renzo Piano is the designer behind the famous The Shard in London as well as Aurora Place in Sydney while Adrian Smith + Gill Architecture is famous for designing the 829.8m Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Kohn Pederson also consistently win awards for their designs.
