Work on the main structure of the Shanghai Tower was completed on Saturday, with the final beam installed at a flag-waving ritual. At 632 metres, the skyscraper is now China's tallest building and the world's second-tallest building, surpassed only by Dubai's Burj Khalifa.

Christchurch, New Zealand

Japanese architect Shigeru Ban’s Cardboard Cathedral has been opened to the public. Made from 98 cardboard tubes wrapped around a screen of colorful glass windows, the building was designed as a temporary replacement for the city's former Anglican cathedral, which was destroyed by the 2011 earthquake.

The Beijing Cultural Heritage Protection Centre has written to the RIBA to express its disdain over the decision to give Zaha Hadid’s Galaxy Soho office and retail scheme a RIBA award. The group has accused the Galaxy Soho project of “violating a number of heritage preservation laws and regulations”, as well as causing “great damage” to the preservation of the original streetscape.

New York City Council has allocated $7 million to redevelop an 11,000 square foot strip of neglected land under the Brooklyn Bridge into a beach. Originally conceived as part of New York’s “Blueway” plan, the waterfront project will include terraced seating, wading pools and fishing areas.

Ikea has added an augmented reality (AR) function to its 2014 catalogue. Using the Ikea catalogue and AR app, customers will be able to try out 90 products for size, shape, colour and positioning without having to leave the comfort of their own home.
