Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Cooled Conservatories, Gardens by the Bay in Singapore by London-based Wilkinson Eyre Architects is the winner of the 2013 RIBA Lubetkin Prize for the best new international building. The conservatories are the biggest climate-controlled greenhouses in the world and a key project in the Singapore Government’s vision of transforming it into a ‘City in a Garden’.

Rostov, Russia

London-based Twelve Architects & Masterplanners have won a competition to deliver a radical new airport for Rostov, Russia, in time for the 2018 World Cup. The £600 million airport is set to handle an initial demand of five million passengers a year, incorporating ”offices, a hotel, a business centre and a high-speed railway station”.

Barcelona, Spain

The Sagrada Familia Foundation has released a computer generated 3-D video depicting the construction of the emblematic Sagrada Familia cathedral. The architect currently in charge of the eccentric masterpiece has promised it will be completed by 2026, 144 years after the first stone was laid by Antoni Gaudi.

Virgina, United States

The world’s first solar panelled pavement has been installed at George Washington University in Ashburn, Virginia. Designed by Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) specialists Onyx Solar, the pavement panels generate approximately 400Wp of energy and will power 450 LED pathway lights beneath the panels themselves.

Ptuj, Slovenia 

ENOTA are transforming an 800-year-old, former Dominican monastery into a congress and cultural centre. The structure has seen numerous changes over the years, from its initial romanesque configuration, through several interim gothic phases to reach the current baroque form. The restoration aims to showcase the building’s historical value, while adapting to its future usage without any major, invasive interventions.
