Graduate planner Ceit Wilson has won the Minister for Local Government’s Town Planning Prize 2011 Award in Queensland.
Wilson, who works for Parsons Brinckerhoff won with an entry titled Housing resource communities: The role of mining companies in rural development.
The winner was selected by the University of Queensland.
Wilson said she was honoured to receive the award.
“The planning profession has a profound impact on all parts of population growth and lifestyle.
“I am excited to be a part of this important profession in Queensland.”
Her entry looks at the contemporary role of mining companies in rural development.
She identified that mining companies have an expanded role in housing supply with provision not only for their workforce, but also to the wider community.
“Mining companies now play an active role in encouraging and facilitating local development in resource towns,” said Miss Wilson
The Minister's Town Planning Prize recognises and encourages emerging planners who are tackling practical planning problems faced by local governments. Final year planning students studying at five Queensland universities were nominated, each by their respective University.
Wilson was also the recipient of the Planning Institute of Australia Queensland Division prize in 2011. The prize recognised a fourth year student participating in the University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning degree who had demonstrated the greatest proficiency over the whole program.
Parsons Brinckerhoff national capability executive for planning, Mitzi Venn, said this is an outstanding recognition for a young professional.
“Miss Wilson fosters an enthusiasm for planning and is well-qualified to be a part of managing
Queensland’s growth and preservation through the planning profession,” said Ms Venn.
