Alexandros E. Washburn has been announced as the keynote in September at the International Urban Design Conference in Melbourne.

Washburn is the Chief Urban Designer of the City of New York, Department of City Planning. He is quted:

"Urban design is a very powerful tool, and it is meant to change things. If you are satisfied with the status quo, you don’t need urban design.

“But if you live in a city that that is excited by the future, with an eagerness for transformation, you need to have an urban design capacity for leadership."

Washburn is an architect who has worked both in the private and public sector, he served as Environment and Public Works Advisor on Capitol Hill to US Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, then as President of the Pennsylvania Station Redevelopment Corporation, and then as partner of W Architecture and Landscape Architecture LLC, where he designed the award-winning Harlem Piers waterfront park before joining the Bloomberg Administration in his current position.

He will be joined by 50 other presenters who will deliver the program at the Hilton on the Park in Melbourne from Monday the 10th to Wednesday 12th of September 2012.

The International Urban Design Conference was established in 2007. Since then over 390 presenters have shared their knowledge in developing a range of themes including, Resilience in Urban Design2011, Designing the Future 2010, Waves of Change - Cities at Crossroads 2009 and Survival: implementing tomorrow's city 2007.
