Construction work is about to get underway on Frank Gehry’s Sydney building at the University of Technology (UTS) after the NSW Department of Planning approved the unique design plans.
Construction work will start in a matter of months on the 12-storey building that will be the new business school.
The building is set to be complete by 2014 and will be named after philanthropist Dr. Chau Chak who donated $20m towards the project which is part of an estimated $1 billion cluster of buildings for the campus.
The key features approved according to UTS are the construction of a pedestrian link which will connect from the site to the Ultimo Pedestrian Network, installation of CCTV, 177 bicycle parking spaces and the installation of a ‘gas-fired tri-generation plant which will enable the building to generate its own power and achieve a five-star energy rating.’
Professor Milbourne from UTS praised the first Gehry construction in Australia:
“The collaborative nature of the design process will ensure the building is also an extraordinary asset for UTS students and academics."
Early works began on site in late 2011, with the European heritage archaeological excavation recently completed. The main excavation works are now proceeding with the main building works due to begin in mid 2012.
