A townhouse complex at Redbank Plains is the first in South East Queensland to win the maximum six star energy rating for new residential buildings.
The complex of 18 townhouses at Redbank Plains, designed created by Brisbane designer Brett Blacklow, from Earth Spirit Homes, includes electrical switches that indicate when off-peak power is available and a master switch that turns off all standby appliances when residents leave the house.
Developed by Met Developments, the houses also include passive heating and cooling.
The designs produce 90 per cent less waste, 40 per cent less emissions and have 38 per cent less embodied energy than traditional buildings.
Decking is made from low-maintenance, recycled plastic milk cartons.
Climate Change and Sustainability minister, Kate Jones, officially opened the Amarco complex in Bruce Street yesterday.
“This innovative development shows that building sustainably to energy efficient standards doesn’t need to be expensive or impact on lifestyle,” Jones said.
“Queensland’s extraordinary population growth needs to be properly planned for in terms of water and energy use and waste disposal and this development shows that it can be done.”
Jones said the six star energy rating on the Amarco development meant more efficient use of resources and lower running costs for residents.
