ARM Architecture, Denton Corker Marshall, OMA and Donovan Hill, Grimshaw Architects with NMBW and Kerstin Thompson Architects, and McBride Charles Ryan have been shortlisted in the Monash Architectural Design Competition.

Each will vie to design a proposed new $150 million Law, Business and Economics Complex at the University’s Caulfield campus.

The development of a high-quality concept design will be the centerpiece of a major fund-raising campaign, which will be necessary to provide the funding for the proposed new building.

The five finalists, drawn from almost 40 submissions, will now advance to the next stage of a competition to design the new campus buildings, with the successful firm to be announced in October.

University Chancellor and Chair of the Monash University Council, Dr Alan Finkel AM, said the submissions received from Australia’s finest architectural practices were of a very high standard.

“We were thrilled by the impressive calibre of EOIs received, from many of Australia’s finest and most prestigious architectural practices, in some cases working in conjunction with international partners,” Dr Finkel said.

Five jurors including the chairperson, Dr Finkel, assessed the submissions against the selection criteria, including the demonstration of high-quality building and urban design, the delivery of high levels of functionality and environmental sustainability as well as sound project management and practice resourcing.

“In the end only those practices that offered the very highest combination of skills and abilities were selected to participate in the design competition. The jury was unanimous in its selection of the shortlist.”

The competition is endorsed by the Australian Institute of Architects.
