The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust has redeveloped the Middle Head parklands in Mosman, the design provided by CM+ Architects and landscapes by Turf Design.
A total of 21 heritage premises have been refurbished in a two-year project.
The site is considered of heritage significance as an important element in the entire former military reserve and defence lands at Middle Head.
The site contains buildings constructed in the early days of WWII in the Pacific which are tangible reminders of the type, range and standard of buildings required to mount a defence of Australia in wartime.
When the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust inherited the site in 1999, the buildings were run down and the tropical gardens overgrown and weed-infested.
The inherent nature of these simple hut clusters connected by covered walkways with lush gardens was still evident and retaining this institutional character was a driving design outcome.
There had been many additions over the years that confused the layout of the original huts so these were either removed altogether or reduced in size.
The interlinking walkways built by ASOPA to integrate the huts were re-designed and re-constructed to provide disabled access to all buildings.
Care was be taken to avoid and minimise removal of original built fabric from the WW II barracks period and original adaptation for ASOPA, as these elements had heritage significance. The simple colours and finishes selected on this project reflect the original nature of the original buildings.
The landscape architects have recreated the tropical gardens in the series of intimate courtyards that exist between the huts.
